Leaving the factory protective film (often colloquially called a "scratch card," "scratch guard," or "nylon seal") on a new TV screen can cause permanent vertical or horizontal display line issues.
Modern television panels generate a significant amount of heat during operation, and leaving this shipping material on the screen severely impacts the TV's health.
Why Leaving the Protective Film Causes Line Issues
- Trapped Heat & Overheating: The shipping film is designed solely to protect the TV from scratches during transportation, not for active use. Keeping it attached acts like an insulation layer, trapping heat on the front of the display panel.
- COF (Chip-on-Film) Bonding Failure: Television panels rely on micro-thin ribbon cables called COF (Chip on Film) or tab bonds attached along the edges. Excessive heat from a trapped screen weakens or melts the delicate adhesive holding these connections together. When a connection breaks, an entire row or column of pixels loses its data signal, creating permanent vertical or horizontal lines.
- Adhesive Degradation: Over time, the heat from the TV screen causes the chemical adhesive on the shipping film to bake into the display. When you eventually try to peel it off, the hardened glue can pull and strain the display panel layers, physically tearing the internal circuitry or ruining the screen finish.
⚠️ Crucial Warning: Do Not Peel the Wrong Layer!
Before grabbing the edge of your screen, make absolutely sure you are pulling the temporary packaging film and not the permanent polarizing layer.
- The Protective Film: Typically features a prominent, colorful pull tab on one of the corners, text warnings, or a barcode sticker on the screen.
- The Polarizing Filter: This is an essential component built into the glass structure of LCD/LED TVs that allows you to see the actual image. It has no tabs or stickers. If you peel this off by mistake, your TV screen will turn completely white and become permanently ruined.
What to Do Next
- Turn off the TV and let it cool down for a couple of hours if it has been running.
- Carefully inspect the corners to find the designated pull tab or barcode sticker.
- Slowly and diagonally peel off the film while keeping a steady hand on the TV frame to stabilize it.
- If lines have already appeared: Turn off the TV and unplug it from the wall socket for 30 minutes to do a full power reset. If the lines persist after it cools down and restarts, the internal bonding has likely suffered permanent heat damage, and the panel or T-Con board will need professional inspection.
